I have been posting on food quite a bit, because the food subject is on the minds, of almost all of us at least 3 times a day. You know what I’m saying? What do you want to eat for breakfast, or lunch, or dinner, seem to be the questions that we all ask our self’s at least daily at some point. If you are like me, you may like to try new foods and ways to cook them. But what does it taste like?
Go a head it tastes like chicken! Yes it does! Wink, wink! Have you ever been told this line of BS when you were confronted with some new kind of food / foods, or the way it was prepared. How does it taste anyway? How can or do you describe it to someone who hasn’t tried it before? Shure it isn’t all that easy anyway to describe that food. But does chicken tastes like everything else, or does everything tastes like chicken?
So I came up with a new way to feed your kids oatmeal cereal in the morning. If they ask what it tastes like? You know the drill. But what do you think about candy bar tasting oatmeal cereal? Sounds so good! What kind of kid doesn’t like candy bars? They may also like chicken, but given the choice between the two, the bars win. I think the phrase ” You are what you eat “,is also true. Now that explains the extra weight I put on of late. Maybe the chickens of the world would choose to eat my candy bar oatmeal cereal as well? So in that way this cereal would then pass the test, along with the phrase ” You are what you eat.”, So I can stand on the facts of explaining this new cereal as tasting just like chicken. All though more likely like sweet chicken, without the sour part this time. Why isn’t there a candy bar flavor of sweet-N-sour chicken? Just a quick thought.
What you do is…. wait for it! Okay. You cook your oats or oat bran cereal along with chocolate and peanut butter. Ya! That’s it! Reese’s pieces of oatmeal breakfast cereal. I know they have such a thing already, but not really. This is different from just putting chunks of the candy bar in the oats. All though one could do this anyway if they would choose to do so. With oat cereal, kids look at it like, what is this slop? All of the encouragement in the world by saying that it tastes great or tastes like chicken will not work. But reminding them it tastes like the candy bars, and that there is chocolate and peanut butter in it. Well!! They probably would have picked up the spoon already and been giving it a try by now. Just saying! Try it you may like it?
In the world of kids and their foods, the ones they like. Is somewhat difficult for parents to master. On the one hand we parents like to have foods that tastes good, on the other hand it has to be healthy. At least promoting good health. Not saying healthy foods don’t taste good. It just seem that way for kids. Kids just eat because they like the taste, and off they go. Not too much thought to health. But why? Kids think they will live for ever. But when they get their first illness like the flu. They change their minds, just for as long as they have the flu. Then back to the same opinion.
I guess “A person changed against their own will, is of the of the same opinions still!
So chips and dip wins over the brocoli. Pizza wins over salad. Captain Crunch wins over oat bran cereal. And all the while throwing in candy / candy bars, soda, all says snacks and great choice for the adolescents balanced diet. ( They may request chicken noodle soup when not feeling well.)
Realize anything? They eat just for the taste of things, and or there looks. If it looks good then there in. If it looks funny then “we will pass”. Only to try it later when their all grown up. Maybe? Even then maybe not liking it at that point. Time to wake-up! I’m dreaming! Kids don’t really get to a point of grownup till they reach the age of 30 anyway, or so it seems.
A kid looking towards foods like calamari, brocoli, spinach stuffed halibut, pasta and goat cheese / or blue cheese, whole grain pasta / brown long grain rice, no matter if it is cooked with chicken or not! Probably will not be trying it too soon!
Hay it tastes like chicken! Right?
The look on their faces is like a funny clown, or just their best impersonations of the Mr. Yuck sticker!
What is a parent to do? All right mind games is at the top of my game play list at this point.
I say. ” You know what a cannibal is right?” They nodding their heads thinking at the same time I’m not eating that! ” Well because you know what a cannibal is. Just imagine that you’re a cannibal and your real hungry! You are looking at each other as food and want the hunger pains to go away. But just before you kill each other for a meal. This clown comes to your cannibal town. You have never eaten clown before? So what do you think about two cannibals eating a clown? May taste like chicken?
I tried my best! But the look on the faces were somewhat more jovial. but not thrilled about the food. ” Come on your cannibals you will eat just about anyone that comes to town!” I displayed my best convincing expression on my face. But all for not!
What was wrong with my failed mind games to get them to eat?
“That’s so stupid! everyone knows that clowns taste funny mom! Just like that food you are trying to get us to eat!” They tell me as they pat me on my back. ” But nice try tho”
We do eat with our eyes first.
Note to self! Must become the David Copperfield of food. Make everything to look like candy bars or chicken!
Blessings they are still eating oatmeal. But for how long before their friends say ” That’s not cool.” and that too will change! I will take it one day at a time.
What do you have when you have cannibals eating clowns? Some things that taste funny!
All the best!
